SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW WRITING WORKSHOP: STRENGTHENING ACADEMIC PUBLISHING SKILLS

By Najah binti Mohd Ali and Fazlin Shamsudin, Senior Librarians, Information Literacy Section

SERDANG, 2 July 2026 – The School of Graduate Studies (SGS), in collaboration with the Sultan Abdul Samad Library (PSAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), organised a workshop entitled How to Write and Publish a Systematic Literature Review in High-Impact Journals at the Sultan Abdul Samad Library.

The workshop, attended by 49 postgraduate students and UPM staff, was conducted by Dr. Sarah Abdulkareem Salih, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Design and Architecture, UPM. She shared her expertise and practical experience in preparing systematic, high-quality Systematic Literature Reviews (SLRs) that meet the publication standards of international journals.

Throughout the workshop, participants were introduced to the fundamental processes of developing a Systematic Literature Review, applying the PRISMA methodology, critically synthesising research findings, and preparing manuscripts that comply with the standards of high-impact journals.

The session also covered guidance on selecting suitable journals, preparing manuscripts for submission, managing the peer review process, and strategies for improving the likelihood of publication in high-impact journals. Participants were given the opportunity to engage directly with the speaker, discussing the challenges commonly encountered in academic writing and scholarly publishing.

According to Dr. Sarah Abdulkareem Salih, mastering the Systematic Literature Review methodology not only enables postgraduate students to produce high-quality academic writing but also strengthens their confidence in publishing their research in high-impact journals.

The organisation of this workshop reflects the commitment of the School of Graduate Studies and the Sultan Abdul Samad Library to fostering a strong research culture and promoting scholarly publishing within the university. It is hoped that programmes such as this will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to produce high-quality academic manuscripts, enhance their publication prospects in high-impact journals, and contribute to UPM's research excellence on the international stage.
