By: Roslan Ariffin (Head of Reference Division), Norazira Mohamed & Najah Mohd Ali (Senior Librarians, Reference Division)

SERDANG, 25 April 2025 – The Online Database Classes organized by the Reference Division of the Sultan Abdul Samad Library was conducted online over two weeks from 14 to 25 April 2025. A total of 10 sessions were held via the Google Meet platform, attracting 193 participants comprising students and staff from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

This program aimed to build skills in the efficient and effective use of databases to support learning, teaching, and research processes. Among the databases introduced were Scopus, Science Direct, ProQuest, Nature Journals, and many more. Each session was facilitated by professional trainers from the respective database providers.

The majority of participants were postgraduate students, accounting for 148 attendees, followed by 38 non-academic staff. Program evaluations showed highly encouraging results, with 100% of participants rating their satisfaction at levels 4 and 5 on all assessed items, including class organization, delivery effectiveness, and the usefulness of the content modules.

Positive feedback received included suggestions to distribute presentation materials prior to the class and to provide session recordings for future reference. Some participants also expressed hope that similar programs would continue, with more focus on journal search techniques and practical applications in academic writing.

The organization of this class reflects PSAS’s commitment to supporting UPM's True North strategic direction, particularly in strengthening information literacy culture and enhancing the university’s academic ecosystem. This initiative highlights PSAS's dedication to delivering responsive, innovative, and comprehensive services, in line with UPM’s aspiration to become a globally reputable university excelling in education, research, and innovation.

The class was coordinated by Ms. Norazira Mohamed and reviewed by the Head of the Reference Division, Mr. Roslan Ariffin. PSAS plans to continue organizing similar programs regularly to continuously enhance information literacy among the campus community.
