AVOID PREDATORY JOURNALS & MAXIMIZE OPEN ACCESS: A GUIDE FOR UPM RESEARCHERS

SERDANG, 29 September 2025 – The Sultan Abdul Samad Library (PSAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) organized a webinar titled “Predatory Publishing and Open Access: What Every Researcher Should Know” on 25 September 2025, in collaboration with Springer Nature. The webinar aimed to provide practical guidance for researchers on avoiding predatory journals and maximizing opportunities for legitimate, high-impact Open-Access publishing.

The session was delivered by Mr. Kent Yeap, Licensing Manager for Institutional Sales at Springer Nature and Ms. Xian Toh, Account Development Manager for Southeast Asia. A total of 163 participants, comprising lecturers, researchers and postgraduate students, attended the two-hour session, which focused on identifying predatory journals, understanding the risks of illegitimate publishing and strategies for selecting reputable journals and publishing platforms.

Participants also received practical guidance on how to choose high-impact journals, recognize predatory outlets and leverage Open-Access publishing to enhance the visibility and impact of their research. The webinar emphasized the importance of publication ethics and adherence to international academic standards.

This initiative reflects PSAS’s commitment to guiding UPM researchers in avoiding predatory journals while maximizing the potential of high-quality Open-Access publishing, thereby strengthening a culture of ethical and impactful academic publication within the university.
