UPM Launches Library Relevance Index: From Relevance to Distinction

SERDANG, 2 July 2025 – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), through the Sultan Abdul Samad Library (PSAS), has made a significant leap in redefining the role of academic libraries by launching the Library Relevance Index (IRP).

Officially launched by UPM Vice-Chancellor, YBhg. Dato’ Professor Ir. Dr. Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah, the index was developed to ensure that PSAS remains relevant in navigating the dynamic shifts in knowledge ecosystems. The IRP aligns closely with UPM’s strategic direction under the True North Framework, aiming to provide services that consistently exceed expectations.

The launch ceremony was officiated by the Vice-Chancellor, accompanied by the Chief Librarian and PSAS management officers. In his address, he described the IRP as a bold and proactive move by UPM.

“The development of the Library Relevance Index reflects UPM’s commitment to building agile library capacities that are well-prepared to respond to the challenges of the global higher education ecosystem,” he said.

He further encouraged libraries to adopt dynamic metrics that can reflect adaptability in the face of evolving knowledge trends and user behaviour.

“I hope the library will enhance its use of dynamic metrics—those that can measure the ability to adapt to changes—without the need to constantly create new ones,” he added.

Recognising the pivotal role of librarians in this transformation, the Vice-Chancellor also called on UPM librarians to remain attentive and responsive to the shifts impacting library services.

“Librarians must go through the process of unlearning, relearning, and co-learning to serve as knowledge enablers and agents of change,” he said.

Emphasising the broader function of libraries in academic life, he reiterated:

“Libraries must not be seen merely as learning spaces, but as guardians of wisdom and knowledge. Librarians must go beyond expectations to transform the library into a national and international reference hub.”

Meanwhile, UPM Chief Librarian Mr Mahbob Yusof described the IRP as a milestone in strengthening the strategic role of academic libraries. He expressed confidence that the index would catalyze meaningful transformation.

“This initiative marks a pivotal shift—not only making the library relevant, but positioning it as an extraordinary force driving the university’s excellence,” he said.

He further explained that the IRP is a multidimensional metric that measures the alignment of PSAS with the university’s academic mission.

“The IRP moves beyond conventional metrics such as the number of books, and instead embraces a holistic view of the library’s role in fostering education, equity, and innovation,” he added.

The Library Relevance Index is developed based on five core pillars that guide PSAS’s mission: supporting research and scholarship; maintaining relevant collections; embracing technology and innovation; enhancing user satisfaction and engagement; and fostering collaboration with a global impact.

These pillars collectively form a comprehensive framework to advance the library’s strategic role in the university. The launch event was also attended by members of the UPM Student Representative Council (MPP), whose presence reflected the university’s inclusive and participatory approach to library transformation.
