Serdang, 18 December 2025 – The Malaysia Agricultural Resources Division, Sultan Abdul Samad Library (PSAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), successfully organised a workshop titled “Innovative DIY Agriculture: Kokedama Technique” at the Agricultural Gallery, PSAS, from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon.

This program was part of the “Seed of Changes: Innovations in Modern Agriculture” exhibition, aimed at positioning the library as an interactive knowledge hub and enhancing the visibility of agricultural innovations derived from UPM’s research. The initiative not only showcased the expertise of the university community but also connected campus members with sustainable practices and green technologies relevant to the future of agriculture.

The workshop was led by experienced speakers from UCTC, headed by Puan Mahani Amat@Halimi, who shared the art of kokedama, a Japanese-inspired planting technique using moss-covered soil balls. This method is not only eco-friendly but also an ideal green decorative element to brighten indoor spaces.

A total of 30 participants, comprising staff from various Responsibility Centres (PTJ) and UPM students, took part in the session. More than just theory, participants engaged in experiential learning through hands-on activities to create their own kokedama.

According to Puan Nur Azleen Hasan, Head of the Malaysia Agricultural Resources Division at PSAS, “This program offers a hands-on experience that connects knowledge, innovation, and a green lifestyle. We hope workshops like this will nurture interest in creative agriculture and inspire the campus community to embrace sustainability in their daily lives”.

The presence of Chief Librarian, Mr Mahbob Yusof, who visited the workshop and interacted with participants, reflected management’s strong support for knowledge-driven and innovative programs at the library.

Overall, the workshop successfully achieved its objectives, fostering interest among UPM’s community in agricultural innovations while promoting green practices as part of daily living.

Participants had the opportunity to create their own kokedama using the Snake Plant (Sansevieria).

Participants joined Chief Librarian, Encik Mahbob Yusof, for a group photo, proudly displaying their creative kokedama masterpieces.

Instructors from UCTC, led by Puan Mahani Amat @ Halimi, are explaining the planting methods using the kokedama technique.
