Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has adopted an approach to using virtual identity cards for students and staff to replace physical card usage beginning with the 2018/2019 student enrollment session. The virtual card named Putra®Virtual ID (Putra®VID) is a smartphone and web-based environment application and comes with an identity recognition control system using Quick Response (QR Code) technology.
Putra®VID virtual cards have many added value in terms of usage and come with a more efficient control system than physical card usage. The application works online where all validations of student and staff identity (QR Putra®VID Code per student / staff) are reviewed immediately and given access or service authorization via UPM-ID system reference database.
To support this initiative, Perpustakaan Sultan Abdul Samad (PSAS) has installed two new Barrier Gate units at the Main Library entrance / exit and also at the Graduate Wing Entrance which will scan the card QR code before being allowed to enter the Library.
The use of the Putra®VID virtual student card has also been integrated with the self-check machine, to facilitate UPM students and staff to borrow the book and book renewal process at the Main Library and Branch Library.
