The Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015–2025 (Higher Education) [MEB (HE)] outlines Massive Open Online Learning (MOOC) as one of the key agendas under Thrust 9 – Global Online Learning (GOL). MOOCs represent the latest evolution in global education, offering advantages such as wide and inclusive access, flexibility in terms of time and location, and unlimited participation. MOOCs combine both traditional and modern course materials for learning, such as videos, reading materials, projects, assignments, assessments, and gamified activities like quizzes, Kahoot, and others.

The MOOC initiative at UPM began in 2014 under the brand PutraMOOC, offering open-access online courses through an internet platform. The Sultan Abdul Samad Library (PSAS) began implementing this initiative in 2022 by developing two (2) MOOC modules: KOHA and Turnitin, followed by Scopus and JCR modules the following year. In 2023, a Task Force was appointed and assigned the responsibility to develop a platform and content for the Library Assistant MOOC, which was successfully carried out as planned. This MOOC aims to provide knowledge and enhance the skills related to the duties of library assistants, transformed through a more interactive and effective self-paced online learning approach. This method is adapted to current needs to ensure that future library assistants can adapt to changes and provide relevant and up-to-date information to users.

The Library Assistant MOOC uses the Moodle platform, an open-access application that was upgraded from version 3.1 to 4.0. The use of this free application not only helps reduce costs but also stimulates creativity and innovation among library staff.

Two MOOC modules in Malay language have been developed, covering cataloguing and materials processing, and circulation services and collection maintenance. An introductory module on libraries has also been created to provide basic guidance on libraries in Malaysia. The target users of this MOOC are members of the public interested in learning about the key roles of library assistants.

One of the objectives of the Library Assistant MOOC is to enhance the visibility of PSAS in highlighting the field of library science through a flexible, open, and continuous learning approach, in line with the concept of “lifelong learning.” This online learning initiative is part of PSAS’s social responsibility to benefit the broader community by improving access to education and enhancing the quality of teaching and learning, in tandem with the latest technological advancements.

The Library Assistant MOOC can be accessed via the Sultan Abdul Samad Library website or by visiting: http://psaselearning.upm.edu.my/
