The Visibility of Our Library in the Eyes of the World Through SDG Stories

Every library certainly aims to attract people of all backgrounds to stay close to knowledge. Various methods and programs have been carried out to spark public interest in revitalizing our library. Unfortunately, the programs organized by our library are often not highlighted and remain unknown to the public.

However, with the introduction of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2015, the programs that have been implemented can now be showcased to the world! How can our programs be highlighted on the world stage? Of course, by implementing initiatives that support one of the 17 SDGs, 169 targets, and 247 indicators which cover five key focus areas: people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership.

The outcomes of these programs can be reported through SDG Stories, an initiative by the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) via the Library Map of the World website. In addition to raising the visibility of our library globally, the purpose of these SDG Stories is to demonstrate how libraries and access to information can contribute to better outcomes across all SDGs.

Who knows—our program report may serve as evidence that attracts interest from external parties to collaborate with us. Let us not be like the saying, 'the waves are heard, but the sand cannot be seen,' meaning the news is heard, but the proof is absent. The proverb ‘killing two or three birds with one stone’ should be our guiding principle in achieving success. By implementing programs, we are also raising our library’s profile in the eyes of the world. Therefore, project or program leaders are highly encouraged to report their outcomes through SDG Stories on the Library Map of the World website as representatives of the Sultan Abdul Samad Library.
