PSAS Initiative: Driving Self-Archiving and Enhancing UPM Research Visibility through the UPM Institutional Repository (UPM IR)

The practice of self-archiving is one of the key elements of the open access initiative. Through this practice, research outputs can be preserved in digital form and disseminated widely. In line with this, the Sultan Abdul Samad Library (PSAS) has taken the initiative to promote self-archiving among researchers, academic staff, and students of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) through the UPM Institutional Repository (UPM IR).

The main function of UPM IR as a digital archive—to collect, preserve, and disseminate the research outputs of UPM members—has been strengthened through the practice of self-archiving. Now, UPM community members can share all types of published materials, whether from open access or subscription-based publications, globally and without restrictions through the UPM IR platform, in accordance with publishers’ policies. This effort helps enhance the global visibility of UPM researchers.

Throughout 2024, the Digital Resources Management Division has carried out various initiatives to encourage the practice of self-archiving.

Among the initiatives undertaken are:

Roadshows at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences to raise awareness among faculty members about the benefits and process of depositing their work in UPM IR.
Advisory booths set up at the Graduate Lounge of the Sultan Abdul Samad Library and at the Faculty of Science in conjunction with International Open Access Week 2024.
Briefing sessions on self-archiving, held both in person and online, to make it easier for more researchers to understand the process.
Email invitations sent to selected researchers and lecturers to encourage them to deposit their academic works.

As of September 2024, a total of 180 researchers and lecturers have participated in this initiative by depositing their written works into UPM IR. As a result, 227 materials have been made available to repository users. This ongoing effort is expected to further enhance UPM’s global visibility through more extensive and accessible academic publications and research outputs.
